The CFTU has been misquoted and wants to urge every expat foreign teacher in China to make a 2015 resolution to get bonafide 120 hours of TEFL training.

Many people have wrongly suggested the CFTU is anti-TEFL.  This is simply false. We are keenly aware that more than half of the expat teachers now working in China are generally novices with little or no prior teaching experience. This reflects badly on every China foreign teacher and deprives the students of a top quality education that they deserve - just like every student in the world. We are not happy with the status quo and want to improve the teaching standards for China foreign teachers. This cannot be done without more teacher training.

To be VERY clear, we want every teacher in China to obtain more training and this includes but is not limited to teaching certificates whether it is TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA.  Our issue has always been about ethics, course quality, and certification.

However, we want this training to be quality training and not some unlicensed hustler peddling online courses that provide no useful training and a certificate that is not accepted anywhere but the worst possible third world countries like Haiti, Botswana, Guatemala, etc. We also caution you against buy counterfeit teaching certificates as they are now being verified in China and getting caught with one could lead to termination and blacklisting by your employer.

We also do not want newbie teachers being misled to believe that they cannot possibly find work teaching in China without a teaching certificate. This is a bald-face lie. Teaching certificates ar eNOT a mandatory requirement to teach in China, but obtaining this training can only be beneficial to you and yur students. You should want to take a teaching course because it will make you a better teacher and for no other reason.  People that fabricate lies in order to sell teaching certficates are now in the hundreds and need to be exposed as shams wherever discovered.  See our blacklist at

At present only 8% of expat teachers working in China hold a teaching certificate and within two years we'd like it to be 98%. So then what teaching certificate course is a "Quality" course?  In our opinion, the following...

1.  The course is not done online but in a real classroom setting where a real-time dialogue and role play with several students can take place - not simply a one on one course.

2.  The course should be taught by certified TEFL, TESOL, and CELTA instructors and we are talking about genuine and verifiable certifications here - not in-house certificates that were self-fabricated.

3.  Courses that provide you with genuine certficates that truly are internationally recognized and accepted. And in this regard, we suggest that you read up on TEFL accreditaions as we are not allowed by our administrative policy to make any endorsements.

Institute Review
To be frank, I have never seen so many unqualified ESL teachers teachers in one country. Every day in my nine years of teaching English in China I meet yet another "teacher" from America that would never be allowed to teach English in Korea, Japan, nor Singapore because they have no formal teaching education or experience. I also agree that most online TEFL courses are rubbish or just make-a-buck frauds. Real training is badly needed and these greedy agents need to stop running ads that say "Teach in China - No Experience or Degree Required" like this moron David Valley It is people like Valley, Rebecca Tang, Angelina Liu, and dozens of others just like them that created this quality void in China.
