Even though the CFTU warned everyone a few weeks ago, 17 Beijing fake teachers have been arrested (so far) for using fake diplomas, tefl certificates, and other training documents. 3 have already been released from custody and deported. Others still have to pay their fines before they can be deported. This below is an excerpt from a ESL board that the modertaor keeps deleting at the request of their paid advertisers (schools and recruiters that encourage new teachers to come work illegally in China on F,L, M, and X visas)

Maybe there is no coincidence that Beijing has started arresting an deporting expat foreign teachers caught using fake diplomas and TEFL certificates - even the ones furnished by your own recruiter and school!
I read the articles at the links above and count 17 arrests so far in the last 30 days, but all of them seem to be in Beijing. Shit, if this trend goes nation-wide, my guess is we will lose a third of China's foreign teachers. But would this be a good or a bad thing really?
IMHO, if all the fakes were sent packing, then those of us remaining here could probably get a nice fat pay raise. Anyway, the good old days of just getting a warning and a fine are long gone I think."
Nobody seems to know how long the current crack-down will last, but some fear the enforcment may be permanent in Beijing. If this new scrutiny spreads to Shanghai and other major tier 1 and 2 cities, there may be a huge shortage of esl and tefl teachers by the new year. But if you are a gambler the odds are in your favor since only 1 in every 4 teachers are being checked in Beijing. The bad news is that all NEW APPLICANTS coming to teach in China will have their diplomas, TEFL certificates, police certificates, and Z visa verified. I seem to think this new enforcement is also aimed not just at foreign tecahers, but maybe a way to flush out all the scam recruiters. Time will tell. In the meantime, get legit or leave voluntarily before you get nailed.
If you do get deported, they say you will not be allowed to ever work in China again and can only come back as a tourist or student after three years. If you are not sure if your diploma is on the "unacceptable" list, you can check at http://www.chinaforeignteachersunion.org
